Background

North Korea faces severe international sanctions over its nuclear weapons program. The regime is widely suspected of using state-sponsored cyberattacks, often attributed to groups like Lazarus, to illicitly acquire funds, primarily cryptocurrency, to circumvent these sanctions and finance its operations.

Why this is alpha

North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau, through its Lazarus Group, is suspected of being behind the recent $5.875 billion hack of Binance, according to a prominent blockchain tracking blogger. While mainstream news reports a $6.3 billion Binance hack, it does not attribute the attack to North Korea or the Lazarus Group.

Mainstream news reports a 'Crypto exchange Binance freezes assets after $6.3 billion security breach' but does not identify the perpetrator. The social signal specifically names North Korea's Lazarus Group as the suspected attacker and provides a slightly different figure for the stolen amount ($5.875 billion vs $6.3 billion).
